Thursday, July 28, 2005 * (43) specially for laogong...

Several years before the Afghanistan conflict, the women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.

Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the Afghan women still walk behind their husbands and are happy to maintain the old custom.

A curious foreigner asked one of the Afghan women, 'Why do you now seem happy with the old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?'

Without hesitation, the Afghan woman said, "Land mines."

Sunday, July 17, 2005 * (41) would you believe me if i told you...

YEP... I took part in The Straits Times' 160th Anniversary Car Hunt!

5 GOOD REASONS WHY I TOOK PART IN THIS CONTEST...
1. Judith is old enough (but too lazy) to get a driving licence
2. Ben will turn 18 this year & he'll want to get a driving licence
3. Emily loves the yellow colour of the Mazda6
4. I was a Formula One race-driver in my previous life
5. I've got nothing better to do...

Actually, as I read The Straits Times everyday and one of my favourite TV shows is The Wheel of Fortune (not the S'pore one cos the prizes are so pathetic!), I told myself 'Why not?'

It was easy enough to collect the 35 letters over the 2 weeks. It was easy enough to complete the riddle - less than 15min! The 1st & 2nd lines were 'no-brainers' while the girls came up with the 3rd line 'from seven to eleven'. And everybody helped to complete the 4th line! We all knew the location of the car was somewhere at East Coast Park, but the exact spot??

As the 4th line read 'Ronald eyes a perfect game', laogong said the perfect game referred to golf and the location would be the Parkland Driving Range. I sort of agreed cos the driving range was somewhere between the 7th & 11th km marks on the ECP . On top of that, Ronald McDonald was facing in that direction while the bbq pits 7-12 were located close by. LOL!!

So this crazy-mama woke up at 5am and after some hesitation, left home at 5.40am to recce East Coast Park. I drove up and down the stretch between McDonalds and the driving range a few times but I couldn't see much as it was still dark. BUT I did notice some traffic cones and tapes along the service road outside McDonalds. Never mind, I thought, when I come back later, I would just see in which direction most of the cars go!

I got home at 6.40am only to find out that the newspaper delivery was late today. OMG, he came at 7.05am. When the contest form was completed, I hurried Judith and Emily out of the house. After dropping Emily off at school, I sped off to East Coast Park. Then, Ben called... he said 'a prefect game' described bowling perfectly! Then Judith remembered she had gone bowling there once and there was also a 7-11 store. YES, Ben had the correct location!!

When Judith and I reached Exit 10B of the ECP at 8.30am, a jam had just started at the exit point! OMG, it took me 1 hour to clear the normally 1-min flyover stretch! To make matters worse, it was raining cats and dogs! As we neared the service road, Judith hopped off the car, made a left towards McDonalds. But I drove right as the cars going in the direction of Mcdonalds was hardly moving. Luckily I had recced the place this morning and I found an almost empty carpark, which was a 25-min walk from McDonalds!

As I was walking from the carpark, Judith called to say she had found the lucky-draw box and had dropped my contest form in. After I met up with her, she showed me the contest tentage and then made off to meet her friends for the cosplay at Bugis. So sad, I was left with no supporters as laogong had to work today, Jon was at a retreat while Ben had work to complete as he was going out tonight.

The traffic jam and number of Singaporeans who had nothing better to do on a Saturday morning was just unbelievable! How do I describe the humongous crowd at East Coast Park today? McDonalds, Coffee Bean, Komala's and all the other eateries had such unbelievably long queues! I decided to buy a drink at 7-11, but the entire store was filled with humans standing shoulder to shoulder and I couldn't even find the end of the queues. If you want to know exactly how big the crowd was at East Coast Park, let me tell you that today was the FIRST TIME EVER I SAW A QUEUE AT THE GENTS!

Anyway, I took cover in the cool aircon comfort of the bowling alley and even had time to take a nap. At 11.50am, I made my way towards the tentage for the start of the lucky draw but it was delayed by 15min cos the guest-of-honour was stucked in the traffic jam... LOL!

It was very very crowded and everyone was kind of squashed. Thank goodness it was a cool day today... otherwise the body odours could have been worse! At times, I thought I would faint cos there was hardly any space around me and yet some people kept pushing their way to the front. Each was so optimistic and so sure that he or she would be the owner of the Madza6. I really couldn't believe how serious some people were... they even had their ICs ready in their hands!

Well, I didn't win the Madza6 but it had been an interesting 1st-time experience! So, would I take part in similar contests again? Make a guess!
