Several years before the Afghanistan conflict, the women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.
Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the Afghan women still walk behind their husbands and are happy to maintain the old custom.
A curious foreigner asked one of the Afghan women, 'Why do you now seem happy with the old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?'
Without hesitation, the Afghan woman said, "Land mines."
