(77) our budding poet...
I had always thought Jon was a 'maths & science' guy, not the 'language & literary' type. Well, SJI had gotten their boys to submit poems and short stories for the Singapore Polytechnic Creative Writing Competition 2005 and (gasp!) Jon won a prize in the Secondary/Poem Section!
Jon and I went to the prize-giving ceremony this afternoon. Unfortunately, we forgot to bring a camera. Anyway, it was an informal affair and I can always 'kope' photos from the S'pore Poly's website once it's up!Jon's FIGHT FOR FREEDOM:
Slinking through the murky mounds
He holds a dagger in his hand
No single stir, no solitary sound
But his goal is not for man.
Ahead he sees streaks of light
In the depths of darkness
He prepares to fight
Ready to give all, no less
This is his mission
His enemies must fall
They meet with their destruction
And none will survive at all
Gathering speed, arm at ready
Even when he is surrounded
His plan held steady
Swept right through, not being grounded
Those beings of shining armour
They called him bleak
Living only for honour
Yet it was they who were weak
Reaching his destination
The light that sears him
It is his negation
Even if it means life or limb
Plunging the dagger into the Sun
He watches triumphantly
Before turning to run
His duty done explicitly
The darkness has pervaded
Evil has seized the day
The world has now degraded
Sin is now the way
But those shining beings
Not as poor as they seem
They are always foreseeing
And as gentle as the stream
So now call for change
Hold fast to your principles
Fret not being strange
Fear rather the world's twisted examples
Seize back the stolen life
Restore the broken day
With angels we make through strife
And with love none will go astray
Dad & Mum: Congratulations!
Jon the Poet: Looks like I have $30 consolation (to console me) prize.
