Horrors.... I was taking my lunch when a 1.5cm long fishbone got stuck in my throat!
I tried to get it out by clearing my throat as if there was lots of phlegm stuck there but to no avail. Then I stuck my finger down my throat. Nothing.... except for some saliva and spots of blood. How do anorexic girls do it??
My throat hurt terribly and I was about to go to A&E when Rowina, my Filipina help said hesitantly, 'Ma'am, I don't know if you believe or not but I want to do something.' Quickly, she took a long fishbone from my plate, rinsed it, put it on my head and told me to be patient.
I didn't know what to think or say! So I cleared my throat again at the sink with a fishbone stuck in my throat and another on my hair. Rowina reminded me to be patient and to wait a while more. Then I decided to gargle my throat whilst tilting my head in such a way that the fishbone on my head would not fall off. As I bent my head forward carefully to spit out the water, I felt the fishbone in my mouth! I spat it out in great relief!
Rowina told me that she had to say a prayer after placing the fishbone on my head. She added another way they do it in the Philippines was to get a cat and wind its tail round one's neck! Old wives' tales?
But it was really amazing cos it was all over in a less than 2 minutes after the fishbone was placed on my head! Maybe I should give Rowina the $70 A&E fee!
